Pink after Labor Day
August 31, 2025 | Vol. 144
And a month goes by, just like that. August makes mush of my brain—does that happen to you, too? For the first time in a long time, I’m excited to get back into a fall routine. Wake-up times, packed lunches, all of it. Maybe then I can start to string words together on paper again.
So, what’s been new around these parts? Well, my son Isi turned two! Also, we went on a kid-free trip to the Amalfi Coast and have been eating at all of our favorite West Village spots while city dwellers have been beaching elsewhere.
Below, a little of this and a little of that. Skim as you please and then get back to your breezy Kindle read, your coffee, your morning stroll. Let’s soak in the last Sunday of summer.

I love a Sunday routine, a “What’s in my bag?”—any kind of easy question that segues into the way a person lives. For Cultured, chef Mina Stone asked forty artists what their favorite food is, and the answers fall squarely into that category for me. There’s something so simple about this that I love:
“Coffee. I dream about it the night before.” —Sam Moyer
“I can’t live without fruit. I like all of it, even bananas. In the summer, I obsess over finding the perfect juicy cantaloupe.” —Jenna Gribbon
“Sunflower seeds.” —Kon Trubkovich
“Eggs, smoothies, and cheese. Not together.” —Elizabeth Jaeger

I interviewed Kristin Scott Thomas for Vogue this month around the release of her directorial debut, My Mother’s Wedding. It’s partly based on the true story of how Scott Thomas lost her father and stepfather at a young age. I love the way she reflects on her life, her work, and her collaborations. A real and true icon of our time. (Another rec: Scott Thomas’ Fashion Neurosis podcast episode.)
Two years ago, I broke the news of a Freaky Friday sequel in an interview with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. This month, on the heels of the sequel’s release, I spoke with them again—as well as the two younger Freakier Friday castmates, Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons. I so enjoyed speaking to these four actors about nostalgia, chemistry, and the power of bonds between women. Also, the new movie happens to be a lot of fun. Perfect mid-day movie theater outing with a bucket of popcorn (which, I recently discovered on a trip to Regal Cinemas, is as enormous as ever). Here’s the trailer:
It feels fitting to close out summer with a painting by Alex Katz, whose subjects and colors often evoke the season so damn well. Sebastian Smee reflects on this painting in The Washington Post and puts a finger on why Katz is such a singular figure in art today. He just turned 98 years old. Smee writes:
“In an era of visual onslaught, and maximum, digitally enabled elaboration, his eye for distillation often points to a refusal even to begin to describe phenomena — like waves or ripples, for instance — that most other artists wouldn’t think to omit.
This restraint can give his work the charismatic power of an orator who steps to the lectern, then declines to speak.”

In my Instagram-based culinary journey, I’ve moved from Ruhama (still the OG) to Sivan’s Kitchen. Last week, I made this 30-minute dinner, but I must warn you, it took me closer to an hour—which maybe says more about me than the recipe. But: It was excellent! The schnitzel was crispy and flavorful and the pasta was so good, it might be my new favorite way to make spaghetti? 10/10 recommend.

I saw The Naked Gun in theaters recently, and it was as silly and delightful as it promised to be; trailer here. Pamela Anderson shines. (We here are big fans of her renaissance.) In the movie, she plays a crime novelist whose brother is killed; Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) is on the case. But we’re talking about food here, mostly, so the news is: Now, Anderson has begun making pickles! Is there anything this woman can’t do?
Having returned to New York from a week on the Amalfi Coast in early August, this one by Rob Wilson hit particularly close to home.
As summer wanes, I have one color on my mind: pink. Light pink to end the warm months and light pink to kick off fall. I’ve either purchased or am dangerously close to purchasing nearly everything on this list. (Help!) So if you’re looking for me in the next month, I’ll be the one in dusty ballerina pink from head to toe.
This Madewell sweatshirt goes in and out of stock, so I’m keeping an eye out. The neckline is great. If you lean ’90s preppy, Polo Ralph Lauren has a good one.
I saw these curved satin Cordera pants on Joyce Lee’s shopping list and instantly added them to my own.
Soft, thin, and on sale: this La Ligne polo top is excellent.
My very favorite long-sleeved tee is this breton striped shirt from Matteau. I have it in navy stripe and red stripe and can hardly justify another… or can I?
I think this Flore Flore 3/4 tee is what my daughter Pella would call “fabulous!”
Tibi’s nylon asymmetrical skirt is very flattering. So is the brand’s Calder sweatpant for more casual things.
This sneaker! Maybe not in ballet slipper pink, but let’s stick to the theme. Dolce Vita makes a great suede alt at a fraction of the cost.
As we enter fall, you should know that Cos makes the best cashmere sweaters for the price. Here’s the crewneck in, you guessed it, light pink.
And if your mind is still at the beach, well, this Left on Friday swimsuit is the one that got away this summer.
I love a shirtdress, always and forever. (Xirena makes my favorite, but this is the closest shade I could find.)
A great crossbody bag, now in dusty pink.
Patiently waiting for this Hervé Chapelier coated canvas tote to restock in our favorite pink…
This sweet, lightweight summery set from Emily Levine Milan is on my mind: top and bottom.
And that’s it! More soon, once school begins, at long last.
